Durham County Sheriff
HomeCommunications
The Communications Center is most often the first point of contact the public has with the Sheriff’s Office. It is staffed with two telecommunicators at a time and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Telecommunicators are responsible for answering calls from the public and dispatching deputies in response to calls for service. With the help of a computer-aided dispatch system, telecommunicators manage, monitor, and provide vital information to deputies “in the field” throughout Durham County.
Each telecommunicator is certified by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Training and Standards Commission. They also receive certification to operate the North Carolina Division of Criminal Information (DCI) and National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) systems.
