The Crime Analysis Unit is responsible for the collection and analysis of crime data. The Agency closely monitors crime data to determine staffing allocation and ongoing crime prevention efforts.

Uniform Crime Reports

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office serves as the primary law enforcement agency for the approximately 200 square miles of unincorporated area within Durham County. Criminal activity in this area is tracked and reported monthly by the Crime Analysis Unit to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) according to the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) standards.

Crime Categories

UCR Part I crime data is divided into two primary areas:  violent crime and property crime. Violent Crimes include murder, non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Property crimes include burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson.

Crime Reporting Nationwide

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program was created in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to meet a need for reliable, uniform crime statistics for the nation. Today, data is provided by nearly 17,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States.
